Course Objectives:

Module 1: Fundamentals of General Medicine (Month 1)

• Principles of patient history-taking and physical examination
• Overview of pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of common diseases
• Epidemiology of prevalent diseases in Bangladesh

Module 2: Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) (Months 2-3)

• Cardiovascular Diseases:
  • Hypertension: Diagnosis and management
  • Ischemic heart disease and heart failure
• Diabetes Mellitus:
  • Diagnosis, classification, and management
  • Prevention of complications (e.g., neuropathy, nephropathy)
• Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD):
  • Risk factors, early detection, and management
• Respiratory Diseases:
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma
  • Interstitial lung disease

Module 3: Infectious Diseases (Month 4)

• Common Infections in Bangladesh:
  • Tuberculosis (TB): Diagnosis and treatment protocols
  • Dengue fever and malaria: Prevention and management
  • Typhoid fever and leptospirosis
• HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs):
  • Diagnosis, treatment, and counseling
• Antibiotic Stewardship:
  • Principles of rational antibiotic use to combat resistance

Module 4: Emergency and Critical Care Medicine (Months 5-6)

• Management of acute medical emergencies:
  • Myocardial infarction, stroke, and sepsis
  • Respiratory failure and shock
• Poisoning and toxicology: Common agents in Bangladesh
• Basic and advanced life support (BLS/ACLS)

Module 5: Gastrointestinal and Hepatology Disorders (Month 7)

• Common gastrointestinal conditions: GERD, peptic ulcer disease, IBS
• Liver diseases: Hepatitis (A-E), cirrhosis, and NAFLD
• Acute and chronic pancreatitis

Module 6: Neurological Disorders (Month 8)

• Stroke: Prevention, acute management, and rehabilitation
• Epilepsy: Diagnosis and long-term care
• Neuroinfections: Meningitis and encephalitis

Module 7: Rheumatology and Autoimmune Disorders (Month 9)

• Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
• Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
• Gout and other crystal arthropathies

Module 8: Endocrinology and Metabolic Disorders (Month 10)

• Thyroid disorders: Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism
• Metabolic syndrome and obesity management
• Adrenal and pituitary disorders

Module 9: Preventive and Community Medicine (Month 11)

• Principles of health promotion and disease prevention
• Vaccination schedules and public health programs in Bangladesh

Practical Components:

1. Clinical Rotations:
   • Training in outpatient and inpatient settings in general medicine wards
   • Exposure to emergency room and critical care unit management
2. Hands-On Workshops:
   • Training in diagnostic skills: ECG, X-ray, and basic ultrasound interpretation
   • Procedures: Lumbar puncture, central line insertion, and thoracentesis
3. Case-Based Learning:
   • Weekly case discussions on complex and common medical conditions
   • Multidisciplinary rounds involving various specialties
4. Community Engagement:
   • Participation in health camps focusing on NCDs and infectious disease prevention
   • Conducting health education sessions in underserved areas

Assessment and Certification:

• Basic Level:
  • Written exams (MCQs and short-answer questions)
  • Clinical skills assessment through OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination)
• Advanced Level:
  • Comprehensive final exam (theory and practical components)
  • Submission of a research project or case portfolio
  • Viva voce with senior faculty
